چکیده

A normal-distribution-function-shaped superconducting tunnel junction (NDF-STJ) which consists of Nb/Al-AlOx/Al/Nb has been fabricated as an X-ray detector. Current voltage characteristics were measured at 0.4 K using three kinds of STJs, which have the dispersion parameters σ of 0.25, 0.45 and 0.75. These STJs showed very low subgap leakage current of about 5 nA. By irradiating with 5.9 keV X-rays, we obtained the spectrum of these NDF-STJs. They showed good energy resolution with small magnetic fields of below 3 mT, which is about one-tenth of those for conventional-shaped STJs. key words: superconducting tunnel junction, normal-distribution-function shape, the dispersion parameters σ, X-ray detector

The Suppression of Phonon induced Noise in Niobium Superconducting Tunnel Junction X-ray Detectors

An investigation into the phonon contamination of X-ray sensitive superconducting tunnel junctions arising from the X-ray photoabsorption in various substrates has been conducted. Results are presented on the design of a superconducting tunnel junction (STJ) which substantially reduces or even eliminates phonon induced noise from the substrate. Such noise is the predominant feature in X-ray spe...

Superconducting Nb-Ta-AI-AIOx-AI Tunnel Junctions for X-Ray Detection

We report progress on the microlithographic fabrication of Nb-Ta-AI-AlOx-AI structures designed for x-ray detection. These structures use bandgap engineering both for quasiparticle trapping to increase the collection efficiency and to prevent quasiparticle diffusion out through the leads. Non-standard tunnel junction geometries are used to reduce the magnetic field needed to suppress the Joseph...

Dynamics and energy distribution of nonequilibrium quasiparticles in superconducting tunnel junctions

We present a full theoretical and experimental study of the dynamics and energy distribution of nonequilibrium quasiparticles in superconducting tunnel junctions (STJ’s). STJ’s are often used for single-photon spectrometers, where the numbers of quasiparticles excited by a photon provide a measure of the photon energy. The magnitude and fluctuations of the signal current in STJ detectors are in...

Giant Josephson current through a single bound state in a superconducting tunnel junction.

We study the microscopic structure of the Josephson current in a single-mode tunnel junction with a wide quasiclassical tunnel barrier. In such a junction each Andreev bound state carries a current of magnitude proportional to the amplitude of the normal electron transmission through the junction. Tremendous enhancement of the bound state current is caused by the resonance coupling of supercond...

Subgap Conductivity of a Superconducting-Normal Tunnel Interface

At low temperatures, the transport through a superconducting-normal tunnel interface is due to tunneling of electrons in pairs. The probability for this process is shown to depend on the layout of the electrodes near the tunnel junction, rather than on properties of the tunnel barrier. This dependence is due to interference of the electron waves on a space scale determined by the coherence leng...
